Position Summary

Overall technical leadership for the development and compounding of new fluoro-thermoplastic containing compounds with a focus on TSE manufacturing equipment. Apply skills and expertise to generate material solutions to meet current and future customer needs while overseeing the development activities including compounding, sample preparation and characterization. Assist with planning, evaluating, and executing approaches to meet project objectives in a timely, cost-effective manner.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Plastic Product Development – Formulation development, Process development, including auxiliary equipment selection, screw design, and processing parameter development.
  • Lead Application development – Technical support to new business development, Application analysis and technical feasibility study, Product qualification and troubleshooting.
  • Product scale-up (Twin screws) – Lead technical effort to scale up development products to run commercial volumes on the 30 and 50MM as needed. Process optimization, including screw design, temperature profile and running parameters. Interact with QC/QA department to find the key characterization to control the production process.
  • Oversee Materials characterization – Sample preparation, Physical properties, electrical properties, rheology properties, thermal properties, tribological properties, SEM, TEM, and image analysis.
  • Training of lab and production employees for compounding, sample preparation and testing.
Skills
  • Understanding and experience with compounding, processing, and formulation development of thermoplastic materials.
  • Ability to take defined product performance needs and develop approach, milestones, and execution plan for evaluation of new compounded solutions.
  • Science – Using scientific rules, technical knowledge, methods, and math skills to solve problems.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving – Using logic and reasoning to identify complex problems, review related information, develop and evaluate options, and implement solutions.
  • Ability to apply design of experiments to optimize trials and generate the desired data most effectively.
  • Employee supervision – ability to provide management/guidance to plastics development technicians for both development activities and growth in their current position and responsibilities.
  • Reading Comprehension – Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience with ISO/QS quality systems.

Experience and Education
  • BS or MS in scientific discipline.
  • 10+ years of proven plastics compounding experience and new product development.
